Reviving modulational instability with third-order dispersion

چکیده

It is well-known that third-order dispersion (TOD) plays no role in the onset of modulation instability nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) family systems. Here we demonstrate characteristics modulational can be dramatically altered by TOD two different systems, namely Wannier exciton mass a ZnCdSe/ZnSe semiconductor superlattice and pulse/beam propagation Kerr-like waveguide under non-slowly varying envelope approximation (non-SVEA), with spatial dispersion. Further reveal results numerical simulations suggesting existence recently much studied Akhmediev-type breathers Peregrine-like rogue waves due to development MI stemming from TOD.

Modulational Instability of the Higher-Order Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation with Fourth-Order Dispersion and Quintic Nonlinear Terms

The modulational instability of the higher-order nonlinear Schrödinger equation with fourth-order dispersion and quintic nonlinear terms, describing the propagation of extremely short pulses, is investigated. Several types of gains by modulational instability are shown to exist in both the anomalous and normal dispersion regimes depending on the sign and strength of the higher-order nonlinear t...

Modulational instability of discrete solitons in coupled waveguides with group velocity dispersion.

We study temporal modulational instability of spatial discrete solitons in waveguide arrays with group velocity dispersion (GVD). For normal GVD we report existence of the strong 'neck'-type instability specific for the discrete solitons. For anomalous GVD the instability leads to formation of the mixed discrete-continuous spatio-temporal quasi-solitons. Feasibility of experimental observation ...

Modulational instability of electromagnetic waves in birefringent fibers with periodic and random dispersion.

Modulational instability (MI) of electromagnetic waves in a birefringent fiber with a periodic dispersion (two-step dispersion management scheme) is investigated. The properties of new sidebands are studied. The strong variation of dispersion leads to the decreasing of the main MI region and the suppression of additional resonance. In the random dispersion case the MI of all frequencies of modu...

Effects of third-order dispersion on dispersion-managed solitons

We present a comprehensive study of the effects of third-order dispersion (TOD) on dispersion-managed (DM) solitons. The two main effects of TOD are creation of asymmetry of the DM soliton’s profile and generation of continuum radiation. Considering these two effects, we derive a conservative bound on the magnitude of TOD below which it will not have a significant detrimental effect on DM solit...

Modulational instability of spinor condensates

We demonstrate, analytically and numerically, that the ferromagnetic phase of the spinor Bose-Einstein condenstate may experience modulational instability of the ground state leading to a fragmentation of the spin domains. Together with other nonlinear effects in the atomic optics of ultra-cold gases (such as coherent photoassociation and four-wave mixing) this effect provides one more analogy ...
